INDIA: The auspicious day of Karwa Chauth is widely celebrated around the globe. It is a ritual performed by married women for the long life of their husbands.

This day is dedicated to the Moon God, also known as Karak Chaturthi. This year, the festival is being observed on October 13, 2022.

On the special occasion of Karwa Chauth, all Hindu married women observe fasting and worship Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha. They listen to the holy ‘Katha’ (story) of Karwa Chauth and break their fast only after sighting and making offerings to the moon.

However, the day starts before sunrise and many ladies eat and drink plenty of juices and sweets that come from their in-law’s house. During the ongoing day, all married women get ready by wearing bangles, sarees, sindoor, bindi, etc.

Many married and unmarried women wear beautifully designed mehendis, as mehendi is believed to be a sign of propitiousness.

Karwa Chauth Katha:

In the early past, there was a beautiful queen named Veervati, who was the only sister amongst seven loving and caring brothers.

On her first Karwa Chauth, she was present at her parents’ place instead of her in-laws’ house. She initiated a strict fast after sunrise. In the evening, she was waiting eagerly for the moonrise as she was starving out of hunger and thirst.

Seeing her suffering like this, her brothers installed a mirror in a peepal tree that made it look as if the moon was up in the sky. The moment Veervati broke her fast, she got the most unexpected news of her husband’s sudden demise. She became heartbroken and hopeless.

Veeravati instantly came home and met Goddess Parvati on her way. Maa Parvati revealed that she was fooled by her brothers. Then, after keeping Karwa Chauth fast with complete devotion, Yama, the Demi-lord of Death, restored her husband’s life.

This Karva Chauth Katha of Queen Veervati is quite popular and is usually heard by women observing the fast.
