INDIA: On Sunday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi proclaimed Modhera, in Gujarat’s Mohsana district, which is headed to the polls, as the nation’s first solar-powered village.
From October 9 to 11, Prime Minister Modi will be in Gujarat for three days. The prime minister visited Modhera on his first day in office and proclaimed it to be the country’s first village to generate all of its own renewable energy.
PM Modi declared, “Now we will not pay for power, but start selling it & earning from it.” This was in response to the fact that people in Modhera would save 60% to 100% on electricity bills after using solar energy. Up until recently, the government provided electricity to the people, but now people are allowed to generate their own electricity.
“Modhera would now be known as Suryagram,” PM Modi also added.
The solarization of Modhera Sun Temple and the town was started by the central and Gujarat governments to supply 24-hour solar energy through a solar power plant combined with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Sujjanpura in Mehsana, about 6 km from the Sun Temple.12 hectares of land were also given to this project’s development by the Gujarat government.
The state and the federal governments split an expenditure of Rs 80.66 crore equally over two phases. The second phase cost Rs. 11.66 crores, whereas the first cost Rs. 69 crores.
On October 10, the prime minister will go to Bharuch, Ahmedabad, and Jamnagar. On October 11, he will lay the cornerstone for new construction at the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.
