INDIA: The founder of the Samajwadi Party and doyen politician, Mulayam Singh Yadav, took his last breath on October 10. He was 82 years old.
The information was shared by Yadav’s son and only successor in the SAPA party, Akhilesh Yadav. He wrote, “My respected father and everyone’s leader is no more.”
The SP leader was undergoing treatment at the Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. Yadav’s health was under lifesaving drugs initially. Soon, his health started deteriorating, and he was shifted to the ICU.
He had been under the supervision of Dr. Nitin Sood and Dr. Sushil Kataria at the Medanta hospital since August 22.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the veteran leader following his death. He took to Twitter and wrote, “I had many interactions with Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji when we served as Chief Ministers of our respective states. The close association continued, and I always looked forward to hearing his views. His demise pains me. Condolences to his family and the thousands of supporters.Om Shanti.”
Mulayam Singh is one of the most popular figureheads of India as he served as the Uttar Pradesh chief minister thrice, winning with a majority of votes. He kicked off his political career as a student leader. Then, in 1967, he won the first state election and became the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh for the first time in 1989. He has also served as a Union defence minister three times.
Mulayam Singh’s brother Shivpal Yadav also owns his party, the Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party, earlier known as the Samajwadi Secular Morcha.
But the prominent Samajwadi Party was established by Mulayam 30 years ago in October 1992. Now, the party is being taken forward by his son, Akhilesh Yadav.
