JAPAN/UNITED STATES: During a speech to American sailors stationed in Japan on Wednesday, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris is anticipated to criticise China’s treatment of Taiwan.
Days before Harris’ trip to Asia, Chinese authorities were angered by U.S. President Joe Biden’s unequivocal promise to defend the island that China claims as its own.
A senior administration source who declined to be named predicted Kamala Harris’ remarks: “She will get into dangers to the international rules-based system and how she sees them,” including recent provocations across the Taiwan Strait.
Kamala Harris will discuss that as well as what we are doing to oppose those initiatives and defend the international laws and values that have governed this region.
Outside of Tokyo, at Yokosuka, the largest overseas U.S. Naval facility in the world, Kamala Harris will give a speech. The USS Ronald Reagan, an aircraft carrier that is presently in South Korea to take part in joint manoeuvres intended to deter North Korea, is based there, along with 24,000 military and civilian employees.
On Thursday, Kamala Harris will travel to the demilitarised zone dividing the two Korean nations.
China claims Taiwan, which is governed democratically, is one of its provinces. Beijing has long promised to subjugate Taiwan and hasn’t ruled out using force to accomplish so.
The Government of Taiwan vehemently rejects China’s claims to sovereignty and maintains that only the 23 million residents of the island can decide its future.
