INDIA. Mumbai: Inspector General Manoj Vasant Baadkar took over as the Commander, Indian Coast Guard (ICG), Western Region, in a spectacular parade held at ICG headquarters at Worli in South Central Mumbai on Monday.
As a Commander of the Indian Coast Guard, WR, he will be heading the service for the entire Western Region, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, Kerala, and Lakshadweep Islands.
The Headquarters of the Indian Coast Guard Western region is located in Mumbai. The entire coastline from Daman to Kanyakumari, including the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, comes under the operational and administrative control of the Commander, Coast Guard Region (West).
He served as the Indian Coast Guard for Karnataka from 2006 to 2008 and Goa from 2013 to 2018 before being promoted to the rank of Inspector General in 2018 and appointed as chairman of the Coast Guard Selection Board (CGSB) in New Delhi. He has commanded various coast guard ships and stations over his 36-year distinguished career and has won numerous awards.
The son of Vasant Baburao Baadkar, he hails from a very humble background. He is an alumn of St Joseph’s High School and Government Arts and Science College at Karwar in Karnataka. The ICG ships and aircraft undertake regular patrols to keep the Offshore Development Areas (ODAs) on the Eastern and Western seaboard.
The Coast Guard’s job includes assisting marines in distress and safeguarding life and property at sea, enforcing maritime laws concerning the sea, poaching, smuggling, and narcotics, preserving the marine environment and ecology and protecting rare species, and collecting scientific data and backup the Navy during the war.
