Industrialist Cyrus Mistry Cremated in Mumbai

A host of business leaders and politicians attended the funeral

INDIA. Mumbai: The last rites of Cyrus Mistry (54), a scion of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group and the former Tata Sons chairman, who was killed in a road accident on Sunday, were performed at South Central Mumbai’s Worli electric crematorium on Tuesday.

Mistry’s mortal remains, decorated with white flowers, were brought from the state-run JJ Hospital to the crematorium and kept for friends and family to offer their prayers.

A family priest performed the ritualistic prayers as per Parsi tradition before the last rites. At the crematorium, a pandal was specially built for the funeral rites.

Industry doyen Ratan Tata’s stepmother, wheelchair bound Simone Tata (92), arrived in a special van at the crematorium. Former TCS head S Ramadorai and Madhu Kannan, one of the key executives handpicked by Mistry during his chairmanship of Tata Sons, were also present at the funeral.

Members of the Parsi community, business leaders, and politicians were among those who attended the cremation. They included: Cyrus Mistry’s elder brother Shapoor Mistry and father-in-law and senior lawyer Iqbal Chagla, senior lawyer Aabad Ponda, industrialists Anil Ambani and Ajit Gulabchand, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Supriya Sule, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ganesh Naik, HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh, Vishal Kampani, filmmaker and entrepreneur Ronnie Screwvala, architect Hafeez Contractor, former Congress MP Milind Deora, Mahanaryaman Scindia, the son of union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, and architect Hafeez Contractor.

Mistry and his friend Jahangir Pandole were killed in a road accident in the Palghar district of Maharashtra on Sunday afternoon. Dr Anahita Pundole (55), and her husband Darius Pundole (60), were severely injured. They are under treatment at Sir HN Reliance Foundation hospital in Girgaum in south Mumbai.

Cyrus Mistry, born on July 4, 1968, graduated with a degree in civil engineering from the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London and a Master of Science in Management from the London Business School. He started working for the family company in March 1991 as a director, managing the construction division, according to the letter published by the Shapoorji Pallonji Group on the social media site LinkedIn.
