Bed Bath & Beyond CFO Gustavo Arnal Dies after Falling from Building

Following a stint with the cosmetics giant Avon and 20 years with Proctor & Gamble, Arnal joined Bed Bath & Beyond in May 2020

UNITED STATES. New York: Gustavo Arnal, the chief financial officer of Bed Bath & Beyond, passed away, which the company calls a “shattering loss.” The New York Police Department claims that Gustavo Arnal died after falling from a Manhattan skyscraper. 

At around 12:30 p.m. on Friday, police reported an unconscious person standing close to a structure. Responding emergency personnel declared the person dead at the scene.

According to officials, the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office is still looking into the death, even though no cause of death has been given.

In a statement released on Sunday, Bed Bath & Beyond said it is “profoundly devastated” by this tragic loss, adding that Gustavo Arnal assisted in guiding the business through the epidemic and changing its financial base.

Bed Bath & Beyond Inc.’s independent board chair, Harriet Edelman, stated, “I want to send Gustavo’s family our deepest condolences.

Gustavo Arnal will be remembered for his leadership, talent, and stewardship of our business by everyone with whom he worked. I am honoured to have worked alongside him, and both the Bed Bath & Beyond team and everyone else who got to know him will miss him dearly.”

In addition, Edelman said, “Our focus is on supporting his family and his team, and our thoughts are with them during this sad and difficult time.”

The company had previously announced on August 31 that it would be laying off 20% of its workers and closing roughly 150 outlets nationally.
