INDIA. Mumbai: Former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry was killed in a road accident on Sunday after his Mercedes crashed into a partition in the Palghar district of Maharashtra bordering Mumbai, PTI news agency reported citing a police official.
Images from the scene of the accident showed the crushed remains of a silver Mercedes. The accident took place when the car hit a divider in the Charoti area of Palghar, 135 km from Mumbai.
“The accident took place around 3:15 pm when Mistry was travelling to Mumbai from Ahmedabad. The accident happened on the bridge over the Surya river. It appears to be an accident,” Palghar Superintendent of Police Balasaheb Patil said.
Two other people travelling with him, including the driver of the car, were injured. All the injured persons were taken to a hospital in Gujarat.
Jehangir Pandole, Anahita Pandole and Darius Pandole were present in the car along with Mistry. Jehangir Pandora, a relative of Darius Pandole, is another person who died in the accident.
Darius Pandole was an independent director of Tata group companies and opposed Mistry’s removal as chairman of the company. He also left the Tata group with Mistry. Darius is Anahita’s husband and Jehangir was her father-in-law. The car was driven by Anahita Pandoleová.
This is the latest blow for the Mistry family, whose patriarch, Pallonji Mistry Cyrus’ father died in June at the age of 93. Their empire has built luxury hotels, stadiums, palaces and factories across Asia, but has recently been known for corporate disputes. with the Tata group.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in mourning the loss of the business tycoon, calling it a “great loss” to the world of business and industry.
Mistry was the younger son of the late Pallonji Mistry, the owner of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group and the largest stakeholder in the Tata Group.
Mistry replaced Ratan Tata as executive chairman after he stepped down in 2012 at the age of 75. Mistry joined the Tata Group in 2006 as a director and previously held non-executive positions on the boards of several other Tata companies.
Mistry, the second person outside the Tata family to head the group in its last 142 years of existence, was allowed to retain his post for just four years.
In October 2016, Mistry was removed as chairman of Tata Sons in a dramatic ouster. Mistry was the CEO of construction giant Shapoorji Pallonji Group before he was appointed chairman of Tata Sons. He joined the Shapoorji Pallonji Group in 1991 as a Director.
Mistry was born on July 4, 1968, and completed his Civil Engineering degree at the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in London. He also holds a master’s in Management from the London Business School.
