The United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that. Since the commencement of the rainy season, not less than 38,000 Sudanese nationals have been affected by floods. Sudan always faces flood-related issues from June to October every year.

“The number of people killed by the floods has risen to 75, leaving 12,551 houses destroyed and another 20,751 partially damaged and left 30 people injured. Sudan often witnesses floods caused by heavy rains from June to October”, a National Council for Civil Defence statement said.

However, the country’s authority has sent a proposal to the humanitarian organisations and the Sudanese Central Government has pleaded for support and quick intervention to curtail the flood crisis in the country.

The UN has, however, projected that about 136,000 persons have so far been affected by flood in Sudan since the beginning of May and it might last till October.

During the 2021 rainy season, 314,500 people were directly affected by rain in the country, the UN added.

Therefore, the Sudanese government has been forced to announce a national state of emergency for three months in 2020 because of a persistent issue of floods which have affected over 650,000 people and property damaged and over 110,000 houses affected.

“136,000 people have been affected by the floods in Sudan since the start of this year’s rainy season, which usually falls between May and October,” an official said.
