INDIA. West Bengal: Trinamool Congress leader (TMC) and Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal have been apprehended by the central probe agency. The CBI summoned him in connection with the cattle smuggling case, but he failed to appear for questioning twice in three days.
The alleged leader was arrested after a one-hour-long cross-questioning session by a CBI team. The probe team arrived on Thursday morning at the Birbhum district president’s house.
According to the Investigation team, the BSF seized more than 20,000 cattle heads during the ongoing smuggling process. The cattle were smuggled across the border between 2015 and 2017.
An FIR was registered on the case, and Mondal’s name popped up during interrogation. Anubrata Mondal’s bodyguard, Saigal Hossain, has also been arrested by the CBI in the case.
According to a senior officer of CBI, Mondal marked himself absent during interrogation and did not appear for probing. “I am ill”, said the TMC leader. The CBI said, “We have received a communication from Mr Mondal informing us about his inability to appear before our officers at our office today. In the letter, Mr Mondal has written that he is on total bed rest per the doctors’ advice and cannot move outside his residence. He has attached two copies of doctors’ prescriptions and requested us to give him two weeks to come to our office.”
The 60 years old Mondal attached two copies of prescriptions along with a request letter seeking a time of two weeks from the probe agency to appear before them at its city office. Bolpur city’s SSKM Hospital authorises the prescription.
