UNITED KINGDOM/NIGERIA: At the current Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Goodness Nwachukwu of Nigeria earned her nation’s fourth gold medal in the women’s para discus throwing competition.
The 23-year-old Nigeria’s sole competitor, who claimed the top prize twice, threw the F42-44/61-64 event better than her opponents to set a new record.
Until now, Nwachukwu is the F42 World Record holder with the best point of 33.35m, while she recently advanced on to throw 34.84m and 36.56m, respectively.
Meanwhile, two other Nigerians, Adijat Adenike Olarinoye and Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, the ongoing Commonwealth Games have received applause and recognition for setting another record-breaking feat.
However, Olarinoye had a total of 203kg in women’s 55kg weightlifting to win Nigeria’s first gold medal. She also advanced to winning another gold medal by lifting 90kg and 92kg in the snatch category of the same competition.
Rafiatu won Nigeria its second gold medal in the 55kg women’s weightlifting event, where she lifted 206kg to set a Commonwealth record for accumulated lifts. Along with this, she also set the Commonwealth record in the snatch category after lifting 90 kgs for her first lift.
Rafiatu set another record in the clean and jerk category, lifting 110kg, 115 kg, and 116kg in all her attempts.
Nigeria’s Commonwealth Games record breakers were rewarded with a 2022 Hydroconquest Longines wristwatch. It is a Special and Limited Edition said to be worth about £2,000 (N1.6M) of prizes.

Nigeria is occupying the 10th position on the medals’ table with 11 medals; four gold, two silver, and five bronze medals, as Adeyinka Benson was beaten in the quarterfinals of the men’s Middleweight Boxing in 71-75kg by a Scottish, Sam Hickey.
Nwachukwu will join the duo of Olarinoye and Lawal to be decorated for the feats attained before the Games end in Birmingham.
