Earthquake of 5.5 Magnitude Hits Nepal

While no immediate damage was reported, the effects of the earthquake were felt in and around the Kathmandu valley

NEPAL: On July 31, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal early in the morning, causing the locals to rush outside to protect themselves.

The 5.5-magnitude earthquake, with an epicentre 147 km east-southeast of Kathmandu, happened at 7:58 am, according to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre.

While no immediate damage was reported, the effects of the earthquake were felt in and around the Kathmandu valley.

This is Nepal’s second earthquake in a week. Earlier on July 25, a 4.7-magnitude earthquake with its epicentre in Helambu in the Sindhupalchowk district jolted central Nepal. There was no significant damage reported at that time.

As per the readings from the center, an earthquake measuring 4.9 magnitudes struck the Kaski District of Nepal and surrounding areas at around 3:56 AM (NST). The epicenter of that quake lay at Dhampus of Machhapurchhare Rural Municipality-7 in the Kaski district. Shockwaves from the quake were felt in Baglung, Parbat, Myagdi and Tanahun districts.

Tremors felt in Indore

An official reported that areas of the Indore district of Madhya Pradesh felt a 2.9 magnitude small tremor on Saturday.

No casualties and damage to property was reported due to the tremor, Indore collector Manish Singh said.

Senior scientist at the meteorological department Vedprakash Singh Chandel said the 2.9-magnitude tremor was felt at 6.30 p.m. and that its focus was 10 km beneath the surface of the earth near the villages of Borkhedi, Navdapanth, Umaria, and Haranyakhedi in the district.
