AFRICA.Somalia: 11 people died after a suicide bomber exploded at the entrance of a government building in southern Somalia. The attack which was launched by an Al-Shabaab jihadist occurred yesterday.
The people killed in the incident include a district commissioner, Ali Waafow and some of his security men. Mohamed Osmaan Yariisoow, the secretary-general of Marka town administration in the Lower Shabelle region, told The Associated Press via a phone conversation.
His words, “Minutes after we had concluded a meeting we had at the district headquarters and were on our way out, we found an unknown man approached us and blew himself up.”
The Somalia-based extremist group Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack. Marka town is about 100 kilometres south of Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia.
“I heard a huge blast. I ran toward the explosion scene. I have seen with my own eyes several bodies and remains of human flesh scattered on the ground,” said a witness Hassan Abdullahi.
In another development, Ethiopian forces said they killed 85 al-Shabaab insurgents during border breach clashes on Monday. According to Reuters, “The insurgents were killed days after they staged rare raids in the area.”
The past unrestrained attacks on Somalia by the brazen terror group, indicate that the group want to topple the government and impose Islamic law on the country.
Al-Shabab has been fighting Somali governments and African Union peacekeepers since 2007. It has carried out many deadly attacks in Kenya and Uganda.
