Remembering Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam on his Commemoration: Reminiscing the Lesser-Known Facts about the “Missile Man of India”

INDIA: Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, the most prominent figure in India, was a researcher, superior scientist and an excellent political figure in the country. On his death anniversary, let’s commemorate his contribution to Science and Society. India’s 11th “People’s President” is the Prima facie to the country, served selflessly for the Nation and continued to mentor DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) for nearly four decades. He was born in Rameshwaram to a Tamil Muslim family, the youngest of four brothers and one sister. He exemplifies ‘The Man of a Golden Heart,’ as he gave his entire salary as the Prime Minister’s Chief Scientific Adviser.

Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam is also acknowledged as “The Missile Man of India” for his power commanding methodology. Kalam was responsible for the Agni and Prithvi missiles’ development and deployment. His intellect and supervision made India a “full-fledged nuclear state”. He solemnly believed in the power commandment; a country would only be valued if it had power. Dr Kalam has received the civilian awards Padma Bhushan (1981) and Padma Vibhushan (1990), as well as the highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna (1997). NASA scientists named a new microbe Solibacillus Kalamii after Dr Kalam.

Kalam was very popular among the youths because of his accessibility to them. The ‘youth icon’ opened his email account to all children in India, as he desired the youths be nurtured to build a better India. Coming from a Muslim family, Kalam continued to be a pure vegetarian. Being the most influential leader of the Nation, his contribution is diversified in the field of Literature. Dr Kalam wrote nearly 18 novels, 22 poems, and four songs in his lifetime. 

Dr Kalam never got himself enrolled in the Institution of Marriage. Being the first bachelor President of India, he continued to inspire millions of Indians. Dr Kalam took his last breath while delivering a lecture at IIM Shillong, leaving behind some apparel, CDs, a Veena, some Books and a Laptop as possession. People around the globe poured in to pay their last respect and homage to this great personality. His innovative way of thinking continues to inspire many hearts to dream extraordinary.

A Book has been scripted on the life of this dynamic personality, named ‘Wings of Fire’; his persona remains to guide and teach every citizen of India. His novel words mark a special place in each heart, “We are all born with a divine fire in us. Our efforts should be to give wings to this fire and fill the world with the glow of its goodness.” Tho he is no longer physically present with us, his words remain to inspire millions of people around.
