1st Monkeypox Case in New Delhi: Patient Kept under Isolation; CM Calls for ‘No Panic’

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal urged people to remain calm and assured them that proper health care would be provided in the event of an emergency

INDIA: The capital city of India witnessed its first confirmed case of Monkeypox. The disease carrier is a 34- years old man from West Delhi. The patient complained of having rashes and fever for the past two weeks, so he was admitted to the Maulana Azad Medical College Hospital. Blood samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune, where they confirmed it as Monkeypox positive.

The man is said to have no International travel history but had taken a holiday to Himachal Pradesh last month with his male friends. Per the MoHFW guidelines, those who came into close contact with the patient must isolate themselves. This is the third confirmed case of Monkeypox in India.

Kerala recorded two confirmed cases antecedents to Delhi’s case. Reportedly, WHO declared Monkeypox a “public health emergency of international concern.”

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal took to his Twitter to confirm the case and assured everyone to stay calm. He wrote, “The first case of Monkeypox was detected in Delhi. The patient is stable and recovering. There’s no need to panic. The situation is under control. We have made a separate isolation ward at LNJP. Our best team is on the case to prevent the spread and protect Delhiites.”

The patient was rushed to the isolation ward in Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital, where he is currently under observation. According to the hospital director, Suresh Kumar, “The person was admitted two days ago. He had a fever and skin rash. We kept him under observation. Later his samples were sent to Pune, and today we received the report in which he was found positive for Monkeypox. He’s being treated as per SoP.” The patient is currently stable, and his health condition is gradually improving. 

About Monkeypox: 

Monkeypox is transmitted to humans through close contact with an infected person, animal, or material that came in contact with the virus. Monkeypox typically presents clinically with fever, rash and swollen lymph nodes and may lead to a range of medical complications. This disease is mostly affecting gay men who indulge in ‘Sodomy’.
