Ghana Confirms Its First Outbreak of Highly Infectious Marburg Virus

GHANA: Two cases of the Marburg Virus disease have been confirmed in Ghana by the World Health Organization (WHO) as announced on Sunday in a statement.

The statement was made after two patients were released from southern Ashanti, Ghana and they both died shortly after being tested positive for the virus. The patients, symptoms included diarrhea, fever, nausea, and vomiting as announced by WHO.

According to WHO, the Marburg Virus is classified as a highly contagious hemorrhagic fever that is similar to the Ebola virus sickness and has an 88 percent fatality rate.

The virus is transmitted to humans from fruit bats and can spread through humans via direct contact with bodily fluids as explained by WHO.

Global health is putting measures in place to control the outbreak of the virus in Ghana. WHO warned that without immediate action the virus can get out of hand.

The virus has no approved vaccines or antiviral treatments but WHO suggested that If patients stay hydrated they can increase their chances of survival.

The Ghana outbreak is only the second in the West Africa region. WHO also made clear that countries at high risk of contracting the virus have been put on alert.
