NIGERIA. Yobe State: Rainfall that lasted approximately 14 hours on Sunday killed four people, including a police officer, and displaced hundreds of households across 11 communities in Yobe state’s Gujba and Gulani Local Government Areas in northeastern Nigeria. Stockpiles of livestock and food worth millions of Naira have also been destroyed.
Residents of Bularafa, Ngurum, Bumsa, Bara, Gagure, and Njibulwa lost their homes due to the flood caused by heavy rain. According to Dr Mohammed Goje, Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency, the devastating flooding incident in some parts of Yobe State has shocked him in the last 24 hours.
The reported flooding has taken on life-threatening proportions, resulting in lost lives and property. According to Goje, flooding caused by a heavy downpour affected 11 communities in Gulani and one in Gujba.
Goje, who visited some of the affected communities to assess the situation, said four people had been confirmed dead, including a police officer, and scores more had been injured. Some settlements were rendered inaccessible due to the flood’s devastation, which washed away bridges connecting the town and damaged and washed out roads.
As directed by his Excellency the Executive Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, the displaced persons are currently seeking refuge in government buildings throughout the communities. And assure the affected residents that the government will intervene immediately.
