INDIA: Delhi Police has charged AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, as well as former BJP functionaries Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal, with distributing hate messages, instigating diverse groups, and creating situations that are harmful to maintaining public quiet.

Senior journalist Saba Naqvi, Shadab Chauhan, Maulana Mufti Nadeem, Abdur Rehman, and Gulzar Ansari are among those mentioned in the FIR, which was filed by the Special Cell’s Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operation (IFSO) section.

“The FIR is against several individuals cutting across religions,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (IFSO) KPS Malhotra said.

“The unit will look into the involvement of various social media entities in spreading misleading and incorrect information with the purpose of causing disturbance in cyberspace that has consequences in the physical realm, therefore jeopardising the country’s social fabric,” Malhotra said.

This comes amid a backlash over BJP leader Nupur Sharma’s suspension for allegedly making offensive religious remarks during a television debate.

On Sunday, the BJP suspended Nupur Sharma, its spokeswoman, and fired Naveen Kumar Jindal, the media chief of the Delhi branch, for allegedly making disparaging statements about Prophet Muhammad.

Protests from certain Muslim countries erupted in response to Sharma’s comments, which were made in a recent TV discussion, and Jindal’s now-deleted tweets. It has created a Twitter trend in certain Arab nations calling for a boycott of Indian products.
