NIGERIA. LAGOS STATE: In conjunction with Foster Prime schools in Lagos State, a nongovernmental organization (NGO) such as Oluwasegun Idowu Foundation has trained about 120 school children in coding.
The coding class camp, held at Foster Prime Schools, Education District B, Ikoyi, has 457 applications narrowed down to 120 after rigorous tests conducted on the pupils are cute across Local Council Development Areas within Lagos Island.
After the two-week event, the foundation Oluwasegun Idowu noted that the event aims to empower pupils to be self-reliant, especially the children from the less privileged homes who can’t afford technologically enhanced schools.
Idowu further stressed that the Lagos state government should do all it could to have coding facilities stationed at every local council in the state to give children ample opportunity to acquire skills to provide jobs and help solve societal issues.
The event, which is in two categories of age 6-10 and age 10-16, was thoroughly taught how to create websites, programs, animation code language, and develop applications. This will enable the children to prepare for the future as the world is gradually going digital, Idowu noted.
Idowu said Nigeria, which mainly depends on natural resources for its wealth, is gradually shifting its attention to tech-apace. So the training is essential as it will help develop future experts and reduce unemployment.
However, from age 6 to 10, Craig Cornerstone, the winner, got home with a brand new HP laptop, while the second runner-up, Olivia Foster, won an Android phone.
From the age of 10 to 16 category, Suleiman Abdul Jabbar was given a brand-new HP laptop.
Also speaking, the Director of Foster Prime Schools, Patrick Foster, said the event is the first of its kind targeted at children. And it is aimed at closing the unemployment gap among the youths.
Here in Foster Prime Schools, it is believed that learning should be fun so that children can easily remember what they are taught against conventional learning, Foster said.
Foster, therefore, encourages the government to collaborate with NGOs and individuals to help in impacting the younger generation positively to prepare for future challenges.
Certificates were issued to all the participants at the end of the two-week event.
