UNITED STATES: After two years as the result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 94th Academy Awards finally began on March 28 at 5.30 a.m. (IST) to a loudly packed hall. For its significant return, the Oscars turned to some of the industry’s biggest stars, including Beyonce, who sang her nominated song ‘Be Alive’ from her debut album, ‘Be Alive,’ from an open-air stage in Compton, where the Williams sisters grew up.
Host Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes, and Regina Hall began the awards ceremony as the ladies took the stage. “OK, we’re here at the Oscars,” Hall said. During the live telecast of the Oscars, three female comedians-turned-hosts for the evening joked about various issues, including pay equity, claiming that three female hosts were “cheaper than one man.” Soon after, the big Oscar winners were announced.
Ariana DeBose created history by becoming the first Afro-Latina to win an Oscar for supporting actress, while Troy Kotsur became the first deaf actor to win an acting award. ‘Dune’ dominated the Oscars, winning six of its ten nominations, while ‘CODA’ took home the night’s biggest prize, Best Picture.
Will Smith, who was already making headlines for his heated exchange with award presenter Chris Rock after the actor punched him for making a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, returned to receive the Oscar for the Best Actor for the movie ‘King Richard.’ His previous performance, however, stole the award thunder from him.
