INDIA: The body of India’s representative in Ramallah was discovered inside the Indian embassy in Palestine. Mukul Arya, India’s representative in the Palestinian city of Ramallah, died on Sunday, according to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

Jaishankar expressed his sadness at Mukul Arya’s death and tweeted, “I was shocked to learn of the death of India’s Representative in Ramallah, Shri Mukul Arya. He was a brilliant and talented officer with a lot ahead of him. My heartfelt empathy goes out to his family and loved ones. Om Shanti.”

According to the Palestinian Foreign Ministry, the Indian ambassador died at his workplace in Ramallah, according to PTI. They have contacted the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to finalize the transportation arrangements for the body to India.

According to PTI, it was not clear how Arya, an Indian Foreign Service officer from the 2008 batch, died. The death of Ambassador Arya was met with “great astonishment and shock” by the Palestinian foreign ministry.

“As soon as this painful news arrived, President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh issued immediate instructions to all security, police, and public authorities, as well as the Ministry of Health and Forensic Medicine, to immediately move to the Indian ambassador’s residence to closely monitor the case of death,” it said in a statement.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants conveyed its profound sadness, loss, and pain at the death of Ambassador Arya,” the ministry said. The church stated that it is in contact with India’s external affairs ministry to finalize transporting Arya’s mortal remains.

According to the statement, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki expressed his empathy to his Indian counterpart Jaishankar and all over to the Indian government and Arya’s family. Arya had previously worked in the Indian embassies in Kabul and Moscow and at the Ministry of External Affairs’ headquarters in Delhi. He was also a member of India’s Permanent Delegation to UNESCO in Paris.

Before joining the Indian Foreign Service, Arya studied economics at Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University. The story is still unfolding, and more details are forthcoming.
