INDIA: The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) marked the second day of its program ‘New Frontiers: A Programme on Renewable Energy’ as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav on Thursday by organising an online session on ‘Women in Renewable Energy: Call for Action’ to acknowledge the role of women entrepreneurs and leaders in the Renewable Energy Space.
The three-day program being held from 16th-18th February was attended by more than 200 participants including Padma Shree Awardee, Mr. Bunker Roy, officials of the Government of India, CEOs, CMDs, and representatives of NGOs, industries, banking institutions, and representatives from international organisations.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Indu Shekhar Chaturvedi, Secretary, MNRE remarked on the role and importance of women’s participation in Renewable Energy and talked about setting up a scheme for DRE applications, greater engagement with the Ministry of Women and Child Development, and addressing women’s issues in industry consultations.
Several women Renewable Energy entrepreneurs from all over the country shared their success stories, highlighting the impact of clean energy access on women. Mr. Bunker Roy, the founder of Barefoot College, called for the active participation of women on the RE platform.
Talking about how regular training and capacity building can change the lives of women entrepreneurs, Mrs. Vaishali Sinha Nigam, Founding Chair, ReNew Power said, “There is a clear link between a nation’s progress and women’s economic empowerment”.
Ms. Mara Beatriz Orlando, the Energy Specialist from WePower, and Ms. Huda Jaffer, Director at Selco Foundation, were among the other notable speakers at the session.
Ms. A. Manimekhalai, Executive Director at Canara Bank, called for committing funds for women, awareness campaigns focused on women, and sensitization among financial institutions.
