NIGERIA: About 10,366 Nigerians have been reportedly killed since 2021 as a result of continued armed banditry, Kidnapping, farmers-Herders clashes, abductions, gang clashes, terrorist attacks, communal clashes, and youth restiveness.
Socioeconomic research firm SBM Intelligence has disclosed this in a report. It further stated that in the fourth quarter (Q4) (from October to December 2021) minimum of 2,085 people were killed.
SBM Intelligence added that with the released figure, Nigeria has experienced a surge of about 47 percent increase in media reports of killings as it was 7063 deaths in 2020 and now 10,366 in the preceding year.
The statistics
It was also reported that about 972 civilians, 629 Boko Haram, and terrorists with 288 deaths. 40 police personnel, 35 soldiers, and members of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) 20 killed.
From the Q4 casualties in 2021 across Nigeria, Borno state has the highest with 618, Kaduna has 355, Sokoto 225, and Zamfara state with 144.
Others from the Southern part of Nigeria include Anambra state with 54 casualties.
SBM further noted that the incident in recent months especially in the northeast has compelled the federal government to use power to enforce and to bring an end to the insecurity in the country.
Buhari’s plead to Nigerians
However, president Mohammadu Buhari while speaking during the inauguration of the Presidential Committee on Repatriation, Return and Resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Northeast of Nigeria, which preceded the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting pleaded that insecurity in Nigeria should be put to an end as life and livelihood of people are lost every day.
Buhari, therefore, urged Nigerians especially the northeast to continue exercising patience as Buhari assured them of ending insurgency before the end of his tenure.
