NIGERIA. Abuja: The National Coordinator of the National Social Investment Programmes (NSIP), Dr Umar Buba Bindir has lamented the rate at which Nigerians are rubbishing the effort of the federal government in its social investment plans. Bindir made this known in Abuja at the opening of a result-based monitoring and evaluation training for staff of the scheme.

Bindir added that the scheme which is put together for the Nigerians’ hardship accompanied by the COVID-19 is not in any way seen yielding its set objectives, as those entrusted with the responsibility are the ones seen doing the unacceptable.

For the conditional cash transfer scheme, Bindir said that those assigned the responsibility of overseeing the activities are the ones who are taking advantage by average benefiting the Nigerians who really need help by diverting the funds to a private pocket.

In place of the school feeding programme, the government has noticed that those assigned with the responsibility oftentimes engage themselves in malpractices by feeding the school children poor foods. In the N-Power programme, Nigerians who are appointed and paid 30,000 nairas (54.6USD) monthly do not go to their place of primary assignment.

Some people who are to oversee the conditional cash transfer and school feeding programme, are exploiting the ignorance of the beneficiaries and sharing the money with them, and so is the condition with the N-Power programme. We engage young Nigerians to teach children in schools, pay them N30,000 monthly, but they don’t go to the schools, Bindir condemned.

This act has prompted the federal government to constitute a monitoring and evaluation committee to oversee social investment schemes for optimal results and performance.

Result-based monitoring and evaluation training

The result-based monitoring and evaluation training is a training for the staffs under the scheme cut across 17 states of Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Gombe, Imo and Jigawa. Batch A under the scheme is aimed at reequipping the Monitoring and Evaluating (M&E) experts under the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development for effective service delivery.

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development under the leadership of Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq was disappointed at the outcome of the federal government plans. And the ministry under her watch will reposition the activities of the ministry for effective results, Bindir noted.

Bindir told the beneficiaries that the training is focused on improving ways to tackle the issues of the people and add value to their lives.

Looking at the pressure by the citizens on the presidential administration of Mohammadu Buhari, there is a need for every sector to do more to achieve great results to improve the lives of the masses, Bindir said.
