INDIA. Mumbai: Three Navy personnel were killed and 11 got injured in an explosion onboard INS Ranvir, at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai, on January 18.
The statement released by the Defense Ministry read, “In an unfortunate incident today at Naval Dockyard Mumbai, three naval personnel succumbed to injuries caused by an explosion in an internal compartment onboard INS Ranvir.”
“The ship’s crew responded immediately and quickly brought the situation under control. No major material damage has been reported,” the Navy added. According to officials, the incident happened around 4.30 p.m.
“INS Ranvir was on cross coast operational deployment from the Eastern Naval Command since Nov 2021 and was due to return to base port shortly”, the release said.
According to the Naval officials, a board of inquiry has been ordered to investigate the incident. According to the reports, the incident had nothing to do with weapons or ammunition explosions.
Moreover, on 14 August 2013, the submarine in the Indian Navy, INS Sindhurakshak, underwent a fire & explosion & sank at the same naval dockyard in Mumbai, which caused the death of 18 crew members.
INS Ranvir is the Rajput-class destroyer built for the Indian Navy, in the earlier Soviet Union. It was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 28 October 1986.
In 2008, Ranvir provided security for the Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh & other high-ranking officials at the 15th SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) summit, Sri Lanka, along with INS Mysore. In 2015, on 22 – 26 May, INS Ranvir visited Singapore. On 31 May – 4 June 2015, INS Ranvir made a port call at Jakarta, Indonesia, with INS Shakti. The current chief admiral of the Indian Navy R Harikumar has commanded the ship early days of his career.
Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar on Wednesday expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of three Navy personnel who were killed on board INS Ranvir.
Talking about the unfortunate incident, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “The news of explosion onboard INS Ranvir is extremely sad. My condolences to the family and friends of the Navy sailors who’ve lost their lives. Wishing quick and complete recovery for the injured.”
