NIGERIA: As of January 9, Nigeria’s total COVID-19 infection cases stood at 248,312 and a total of 3,077 deaths.
The new record comes as Nigeria records 537 new cases of COVID-19 cut across seven states including Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) made this known on its official website.
The affected states
The data available from NCDC has said that Rivers State recorded the highest infection with 313 cases.
Lagos state which is the epicentre of the disease recorded 178 new cases. FCT-Abuja, 19 cases and Kaduna recorded 11 cases.
Ogun and Gombe recorded six cases each. Ekiti state has three cases and Abia State records one case.
However, the number of discharged cases is now 218,997, and 26,238 active cases.
FG issues Lassa fever warning as 510 fresh cases recorded
In another related development, the Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a warning to the Nigerians on the sudden spike in the cases of Lassa fever in the country.
NCDC announced that the total number of recorded cases of the disease has increased to 4,632 and 102 fresh casualties.
The warning said that Nigerians should be alert about the sign and symptoms of the disease such as fever, body weakness, cough severe headache and sore throat.
Lassa fever was first recorded in 2016 and has since then continued to surface yearly.
In 2019 a total of 796 cases were recorded, in 2020 it reported 1,165 confirmed cases.
States and their number of Lassa deaths
Ondo state has the highest number of deaths with 47, Edo state – 15, Bauchi – 12, Taraba state – 12, and Eboyin state – 9 respectively. Other states include Kaduna state with four and Nasarawa with two.

Edo – 2,725, Ondo – 1,006, Bauchi – 164, Ebonyi – 143, Nasarawa – 79, Taraba – 72, FCT – 59, Kaduna – 53, Delta – 50, Plateau – 42, Benue – 34, Kano – 24, Gombe – 22, Kogi – 17, Lagos – 16, Borno – 15, Enugu – 14, NCDC reported.
Others include Jigawa -12, Abia – 11, Anambra – 10, Rivers – 10, Imo – 9, Adamawa – 8, Kwara – 4, Yobe – 4, Oyo – 4, Cross River – 4, Bayelsa – 3, Sokoto – 3, Ekiti – 3, Ogun – 3, Osun – 3, Katsina – 2, Kebbi – 2, Niger – one and Zamfara – one.
