Delhi Capitals Defeats Chennai Super Kings In A Low Scoring Thriller Match

INDIA: Delhi Capitals defeats Chennai Super Kings by 3 wickets to claim the first spot in the points table of IPL 2021. Both Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals are already qualified for the playoffs. In this match after winning the toss, Delhi Capitals opted to bowl first.

Chennai Super Kings inform openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis came out to bat. Chennai Super Kings started their innings with a bang as they scored 26 runs in the first two overs. After that Axar Patel dismissed Faf du Plessis in his first over to give Delhi Capitals their first breakthrough and Chennai Super Kings was 28/1 after 2.4 overs.

Soon after the fall of Faf du Plessis, his opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad also got out. Chennai Super Kings also lost the wicket of Robin Uthappa and Moeen Ali in quick succession and Chennai was 62/4 after 8.3 overs. After that Ambati Rayudu and Mahendra Singh Dhoni stitched up a 70 runs partnership to help Chennai Super Kings post a fighting total.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni played a very slow knock as he scored just 18 runs off 27 deliveries at a very poor strike rate of 66.67. Dhoni got out at the last over of Chennai Super Kings batting innings. Ambati Rayudu played a good knock of 55 runs off 43 deliveries which included 5 fours and 2 sixes and helped Chennai Super Kings reach 136/5 after 20 overs. For Delhi Capitals, Axar Patel took 2 wickets while Avesh Khan, Anrich Nortje, and Ravichandran Ashwin took 1 wicket each.

Delhi Capitals got off to a good start as their openers Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan added 24 runs in 2.3 overs but just as things were starting to look good, Prithvi Shaw tries punching over the infield and Faf du Plessis takes the catch to dismiss him. After 2.4 overs Delhi Capitals was 24/1. After the fall of Shaw, Shreyash Iyer came out to bat. Iyer couldn’t contribute much as he got out after scoring just 2 runs off 7 deliveries.

After the wicket of Iyer, Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant came out to join Shikhar Dhawan in the middle. Rishabh Pant was looking good as he scored a six and a four but he tried to play a slog sweep against Ravindra Jadeja and got out after scoring 15 runs off 12 deliveries and Delhi Capitals was 71/3 after 8.5 overs. Ripal Patel joined Shikhar Dhawan in middle after the fall of Rishabh Pant.

Ripal Patel added 18 runs off 20 deliveries before getting out. Ravichandran Ashwin was promoted in the batting order ahead of Shimron Hetmyer but Ashwin couldn’t contribute much as he scored only 2 runs in 3 deliveries and Delhi Capitals was 98/5 after 14.1 overs. Shikhar Dhawan played a good knock of 39 off 35 deliveries which included 3 fours and 2 sixes.

After Shikhar Dhawan got out, Shimron Hetmyer and Axar Patel put up a 36 runs partnership and Delhi Capitals was 135/6 after 19.2 overs needing just 2 runs off 5 deliveries. But Axar Patel got out off a slower delivery bowled by Dwayne Bravo and Delhi Capitals now needed 2 runs off 3 deliveries. Kagiso Rabada scored a boundary in his very first delivery and Delhi Capitals defeated Chennai Super Kings by 3 wickets.

Shimron Hetmyer scored 28 off 18 deliveries which included 2 fours and 1 six. For Chennai Super Kings, Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja took 2 wickets each while Deepak Chahar, Josh Hazlewood, and Dwayne Bravo took 1 wicket each.
