JAPAN. Tokyo: South Korea defeated Chinese Taipei 6-0 to win gold in the men’s team archery event at the Yumenoshima Ranking Field. The team consisted of ace archers Kim Je Deok, Kim Woojin, and Oh Jinhyek who looked determined right from the beginning.

The South Korean team defeated the Indian team 6-0 to reach the semis.

In the semifinals, hosts Japan gave a strong competition to the gold medal favorites South Korea and put them on the backfoot. However, South Korea bounced back strongly and posted a 5-4 (setpoints) victory over Japan.

Earlier, the Indian trio of Pravin Jadhav, Atanu Das, and Tarundeep Rai failed to rise to the tough challenge against South Korea in the quarter-final of the men’s archery team event. The Indian team had defeated the Kazakhstani team of Abdullin Ilfat, Gankin Denis, and Mussayev Sanzhar 6-2 to reach the quarters. Meanwhile, Japan took the bronze medal after defeating the Netherlands 5-4.

In the mixed doubles quarter final match, Indian archer Deepika Kumari and Pravin Jadhav lost to Korean archers An San and Kim Je Deok. It was the first mixed team event for India across sport. Deepika’s poor string of shots let down the untested Indian partnership who were teaming up for the first time in competition.

With the mixed archery team and now the men’s team out of medal contention, all hopes will now be pinned on the archers from the women’s category (current world number one Deepika Kumari)  to ensure a podium finish in the sport for India.
