KENYA. Nairobi: The immediate former Secretary General at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, DR. Mukhisa Kituyi, today landed in his home country, Kenya where he announced his plans to run for presidency in the country in next year’s general elections.

Kituyi, who has served for the past seven and a half years as the UNCTAD secretary general said that his decision has been advised by his desire to restore political sanity in the country, calling on the country’s political class to tone down and stop settling scores through the use of abusive language.

“Unfortunately, the tensions binary trade of unsavory language that usually associates with the last phase of a campaign is already with us 18 months too soon. And I thought, as I walk back home, I wanted to use the opportunity of my first press conference to urge all our leaders that they can settle their scores but don’t settle as lower. “, he said

Kituyi throws himself into the murky waters of Kenyan politics from what many has described as a plumb and lucrative UN job when the country is facing an unprecedented moment where President Uhuru Kenyatta is pushing for a referendum for constitutional change, against his deputy and 2022 presidential hopeful, William Rutto.

The 65-year-old father of four was first elected to Kenyan Parliament in 1992 and was re-elected in 1997 and also in 2002. Between 2002 and 2007, he served under President Mwai Kibaki as the Minister for Trade and Industry, after which he lost his Parliamentary seat in the 2007 general elections. He then served in several positions in the regional trade and economic blocs, including a chairmanship at the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). He was elected Secretary General for UNCTAD in September 2013 where he served until he announced his resignation in January, to take effect on February 15.

However, Kituyi says that his plan is to now travel home in western Kenya so he can have the opportunity to learn and seek blessings from his family and elders, after which he promises to traverse the country in a campaign towards his election as the fifth president of the Republic of Kenya.

“I commit that I will tour the country to learn to share and to identify people who can walk the same direction with me; roll out a canvas on which we can all write our dreams and see if, on the basis of this, we can bring hope, we can bring empathy, and we can contribute to the renewal of enterprise Kenya” Kituyi said.
