INDIA. Mumbai: The Indian Navy Sailing Championship (INSC) 2023, which began at the Indian Naval Watermanship Training Centre (INWTC), Mumbai, on November 5, under the aegis of the Indian Naval Sailing Association (INSA), New Delhi, concluded on November 9, Thursday.
The Championship featured competition across five distinct boat categories: ILCA 7 for men, ILCA 6 for women, BicNova Wind surf boards, Laser Bahia for team racing, and J-24 for match racing. Throughout the event’s duration of four days, participants engaged in a total of 37 races, encompassing three varied formats of racing. Team Racing was in the Laser Bahia class boat, while the Match Racing segment was in the J24 class boat.
The Chief Guest, Vice Admiral Rajaram Swaminathan, Director General Naval Projects (DGNP) (Mumbai), presented medals to the winners during the closing ceremony held on Friday. He gave the naval yachtpersons credit for exceeding expectations and demonstrating superior sailing abilities in difficult maritime conditions.
The Western Naval Command clinched the Overall Championship Trophy, with the Southern Naval Command securing the runner-up position and the Eastern Naval Command team earning the second runners-up accolade.
This edition of the Inter-Command Championship witnessed participation from over 100 personnel from the three naval commands, comprising officers, sailors (including agniveers), and cadets.
INWTC, an esteemed training institution of the Indian Navy located in Colaba in South Mumbai, hosted participants from various naval branches. Established in 1947, one of India’s oldest and most distinguished sailing schools is also home to the Indian Navy Sailing Team, which competes in both national and international sailing competitions.
The Indian Navy prioritizes watermanship activities, placing particular importance on sailing as a conduit for honing seamanship skills and instilling qualities such as camaraderie, courage, and essential leadership attributes among its personnel. This commitment reflects the Navy’s broader strategy to develop well-rounded and resilient individuals within its ranks.
