INDIA. Mumbai: A massive fire at a scrap yard near Masjid on Bori-Uran Road, about 2 km from the Indian Navy’s Station “Karanja” at Uran in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, caused heavy pollution, and the fire that broke out on Friday was smouldering till Saturday.
The entire area was engulfed due to billowing smoke that emanated from the fire at the unauthorised scrap yard set up on state government land, creating panic among local residents.
Over 4 lakh litres of water were sprayed from nearly 40 water jets deployed by disaster management agencies of the Indian Navy, CIDCO, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, and Uran Municipal Council (UMC) to douse the fire.
No sooner than the fire broke out at the yard, the Fire Headquarters team from INS Tunir, in close coordination with civil agencies, swiftly deployed to address the emergency along with the Quick Reaction Team, Rapid Response Team, and 20 Defence Service Corps Jawans, the official statement read.
Concurrently, fire tenders from the Naval Armament Depot (NAD) were also mobilised to provide support, and an ambulance was kept on standby to provide medical aid.
The operation was coordinated by the Chief Fire Officer, Naval Station Karanja, with officers from INS Tunir at the site of the fire. The fire tenders from the Naval Station were turned around 15 times to fight the fire and cool the boundary to avoid the spread of fire to the neighbouring locality.
The firefighting and rescue operations, including crowd control, were undertaken in close coordination with the CIDCO and JNPT fire departments. The fire was brought under control by Friday afternoon. The Station Fire Organisation provided strategic direction, coordinated the efforts of all teams involved, and ensured a well-organised response to the fire incident.
In the meantime, Uran Municipal Council CEO Rahul Ingale has ordered a probe into the incident since the yard is unauthorised and it is suspected that a portion of the yard was being used to store the chemicals.
