CANADA: A senior Canadian government source revealed on Tuesday that Canada has been working “very closely” with the United States regarding intelligence related to the possible involvement of Indian agents in the murder of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia earlier this year.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had announced on Monday that Canadian domestic intelligence agencies were actively investigating credible claims connecting agents from New Delhi to Nijjar’s shooting in June.
The source stated that they have been collaborating with the U.S., including on the recent public disclosure. The evidence will be disclosed “in due course.”
Trudeau emphasized the international law implications of the case on Tuesday and called on the Indian government to cooperate with Canada’s investigation.
India responded by expelling a Canadian diplomat, mirroring Canada’s expulsion of India’s top intelligence official on Monday, further straining diplomatic relations.
U.S. authorities voiced their support for Canada’s investigation, urging the Indian government to cooperate.
Calls have been made for Canada to reveal the evidence they possess, as this dispute has already impacted trade discussions and led to the cancellation of a trade mission.
India has expressed concerns about Sikh separatist activities in Canada, and Nijjar was an advocate for an independent Sikh homeland within India’s Punjab state, known as Khalistan.
India officially labelled Nijjar a “terrorist” in 2020.
