UNITED STATES: At the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, US President Joe Biden urged world leaders to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian invaders in the hopes that Republicans in Congress would also pay attention. During his three-day trip to New York, he will meet with Israeli, Brazilian, and Central Asian leaders.
Democratic President Joe Biden has emphasized the importance of mobilizing America and its allies to support Ukraine as a key part of US foreign policy. He believes the world needs to send a strong message to Russian President Vladimir Putin that he will not be able to outlast the West.
Republicans, who want less American money spent on war, criticize Biden. Donald Trump, the current Republican presidential candidate, has stated he would work to end the war if elected. Republican leader Kevin McCarthy questions whether the US should continue providing Ukraine with billions of dollars worth of arms.
Joe Biden said in his address that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 is a breach of the UN Charter, which values sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Biden’s comments matched those of United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who stated in his opening statement to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday that Russia’s incursion “has unleashed a nexus of horror.”
Biden and American officials plan to raise funds for infrastructure, sustainable development, and climate change.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy lauded Biden’s statement. He is set to meet with congressional leaders and visit President at the White House. The US is preparing a new military aid package for Ukraine and has urged Congress to approve billions more in security support for the rest of the year.
White House national security advisor Jake Sullivan expressed optimism that this will have bipartisan backing. He believes that President Zelenskiy does as well. Biden was also set to have a conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Later, he will participate in a historic summit with Central Asian leaders.
Joe Biden is scheduled to visit Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva Lula and meet with Brazilian and American labour leaders. He will also meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the first time since December.
Sullivan stated that Biden will discuss “a vision for a stable, prosperous, and integrated region and discussing effective countering and deterring Iran.”
