UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: The UAE’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, will lead the UAE delegation to the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78) in New York from September 18 to 26.
He will discuss the UAE’s strategic priorities and vision for global peace, security, and cooperation in a talk expected to draw over 150 state and government leaders.
Under Sheikh Abdullah’s direction, the UAE delegation will interact with Member States, UN representatives, and other stakeholders on pressing international issues, such as the need to address climate change, prevent extremism, fend off threats from terrorist organisations, and advance women’s and girls’ empowerment.
The UAE delegation will participate in high-level UNGA78 meetings on climate ambition, development financing, pandemic prevention, universal health coverage, the tuberculosis fight, and the nuclear weapons prohibition treaty.
They will also attend the “Climate Ambition Summit” on September 20 to advocate for action and collaboration to address the effects of climate change. The UN-organized summit aims to accelerate the transition to a climate-resilient world economy, a turning point before the COP28 conference in Dubai.
The COP28 team, led by Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, will host key events and bilateral discussions at COP28 in November. The Presidency will preside over the Global Stocktake and Loss and Damage Ministerial Roundtables, and the group will also host significant occasions to boost interest in the COP28 action agenda.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed emphasized the importance of the multilateral system to achieve the UAE’s goal of a better world. The UAE’s participation in the 78th session of the UN General Assembly will align with its diplomatic priorities, as it has made significant achievements at the UN, including historic resolution 2686 on “Tolerance and International Peace and Security” and significant Council decisions on Afghanistan, Lebanon, Palestine, and Yemen.
Sheikh Abdullah expressed satisfaction with the UAE’s contributions to the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda and the climate change connection. He expressed excitement to share knowledge and strategy at the General Assembly to tackle pressing issues like terrorism, climate change, global public health, and food, energy, and water scarcity.
The UN General Assembly session aims to rebuild trust and strengthen global solidarity by addressing global issues. UAE’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, emphasizes the importance of building bridges and promoting collaboration to deepen solidarity and uphold global peace and security.
