CBI Files Charge Sheet Against Three Railway Officials for Balasore Train Mishap

The accused have been charged with offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder

INDIA: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a charge sheet against three railway officials in connection with the train mishap in Balasore, Odisha, that occurred in June.

The accident resulted in 293 fatalities and over 1,200 injuries when the Coromandel Express collided with a stationary freight train at Bahanaga Bazar station, with some of its derailed coaches colliding with the Yeshwantpur-Howrah Express.

The CBI charge sheet includes charges of alleged negligence and culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the accused railway officials.

The officials arrested and charged are then SSE (Signal), Incharge Balasore, Arun Kumar Mahanta, Section Engineer Mohammed Amir Khan, and then Technician Pappu Kumar.

The CBI registered the case in response to requests from the Ministry of Railways, the consent of the Odisha Government, and orders from the Union Department of Personnel and Training.

The case had initially been registered by the Government Railway Police in Cuttack regarding the mishap.

The investigation is also being kept open to explore the possibility of a larger conspiracy and the involvement of others in the incident.
