INDIA: Nita Ambani, a distinguished member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), announced a landmark event on August 28—India’s hosting of the 141st IOC session this year.
Scheduled to unfold from October 15–17 at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Mumbai, the three-day event holds immense significance as a stepping stone towards realizing the dream of bringing the Olympics to India.
Ambani eloquently referred to this occasion as the “golden era” of Indian sports, emphasizing that the IOC session’s return to India after a 40-year gap speaks volumes about the progress India has made in the sporting arena.
“As a member of the International Olympic Committee, it has been my dream to bring the Olympics to India. I’m happy to share with you that we have taken the first steps in that direction. In October this year, we will host the 141st IOC session at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre,” she said.
The historical session bid garnered an overwhelming 75 votes in favor and just one against, reflecting the unanimous enthusiasm for India’s potential as a host. With this endorsement, the Olympic movement makes its grand return to India after four decades.
Ambani, echoing the sentiments of Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, underscored India’s journey toward becoming an Olympic host. Just a month ago, Minister Thakur highlighted India’s enriched infrastructure, burgeoning talent pool, and commendable accomplishments across various domains, revealing India’s aspiration to bid for the 2036 Olympics.
While India has previously hosted prominent athletic events such as the Commonwealth Games in Delhi (2010) and the T20 World Cup (2016), the ambition of hosting the Olympic Games remains a cherished endeavor.
Ambani’s efforts to promote this initiative began during last year’s session in Lausanne, where she expressed that orchestrating the IOC session and subsequently the Youth Olympics would pave the path for India to solidify its position as a potential host for the Summer Olympics.
