CANADA: Legal efforts to limit LGBT rights are increasing, but anti-LGBT rallies in the US increased 30 times in 2018 compared to 2017. Global Affairs Canada warned travellers about state laws affecting them but did not specify where, typically only in Egypt, Russia, or Uganda.

People who identify as 2SLGBTQI+, or lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, or questioning, are frequently referred to as such in Canada.

A Global Affairs Canada spokesman mentioned US regulations that discriminate against the transgender population.

Since the beginning of 2023, certain US states have enacted legislation prohibiting drag shows, limiting the transgender community’s access to gender-affirming healthcare, and prohibiting them from taking part in athletic events, they told the US media.

Tennessee’s governor signed bills in March restricting medical care for transgender children and forbidding drag shows in front of young audiences.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis approved legislation prohibiting minors from attending drag acts, receiving transgender medical care, and using pronouns in classrooms, leading to hundreds of similar LGBT-related laws in conservative US states.

Across the US, conservative-run states have proposed hundreds of similar laws regarding LGBT issues.

The Human Rights Campaign declared a state of emergency for LGBT Americans in June due to targeted state laws. An anti-LGBT graffiti piece and swastika were added to a Florida mural honouring journalist Lyra McKee, who was killed in 2019.

Canada’s deputy prime minister, Chrystia Freeland, the deputy prime minister of Canada, told journalists in Atlantic Canada that the government had hired specialists to meticulously scan the globe and keep track of any potential threats to specific Canadian populations.

When questioned whether there had been consultations with the US government prior to the adjustment, she declined to respond to the UK media.
