INDIA: WhatsApp has quietly started testing a new feature that enables users to edit captions for shared photos, videos, GIFs, and documents even after they have been sent.

This development follows the introduction of message editing functionality earlier this year and aims to provide users with more control over the content they share.

The new feature is reported to be an extension of WhatsApp’s existing message editing capability, which was rolled out to users in May 2023.

With this update, users can now make corrections to captions for media content within a 15-minute window after the content has been sent.

This window is strategically limited to prevent potential misuse of the feature, ensuring that users primarily use it to fix typographical errors or inaccuracies in captions.

Currently, the media caption editing feature is in a testing phase and is available to a select group of users who have the latest version of WhatsApp installed on their Android and iOS devices.

While an official announcement regarding a broader release is yet to be made, these initial tests suggest that the feature could soon become available to a wider global audience.

Using the feature is expected to be intuitive. To edit a caption, users can tap and hold on the media item containing the caption, and then choose the “Edit Caption” option from a drop-down menu. The changes made to the caption will reflect on all recipients of the media content.

This feature coincides with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s recent trend of announcing new updates through his social media channels, particularly Instagram.

While Meta has not officially disclosed the timeline for the global release of the media caption editing feature, the ongoing tests indicate that it is on the horizon.

In addition to this, Zuckerberg recently unveiled another enhancement to the platform: the ability to send high-definition (HD) photos on WhatsApp.

Previously limited to standard quality photos, users can now send images with resolutions up to 4096 x 2692 pixels, allowing for crisper and more detailed visuals.

This feature is available across Android, iOS, and web platforms, providing users with a richer media-sharing experience.

Moreover, Meta’s development team is actively working on introducing the capability to send HD videos, which is expected to be released to users in the coming months.

This further underlines the company’s commitment to improving the quality and flexibility of media sharing on its popular messaging platform.
