UKRAINE: On Saturday, the interior ministry reported that a Russian missile hit a central square in Chernihiv, a northern Ukrainian city, resulting in the deaths of 7 individuals and injuries to 117 others.

The ministry stated that individuals were en route to a church to commemorate a religious holiday when the strike occurred. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko stated in a Telegram post that of the people who were injured during the search and rescue operation, 15 were children, and 15 were police officers.

“A Russian missile hit right in the centre of the city, in our Chernihiv. A square, the polytechnic university, a theatre,” President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who was on a work trip to Sweden, wrote on Telegram.

“An ordinary Saturday, which Russia turned into a day of pain and loss,” he further added.

In a short video that accompanied Zelenskiy’s post, debris was strewn across a square situated in front of the local drama theatre. Parked cars in the area suffered significant damage, and the video briefly captured a body slouched inside one of the cars.

According to Ukrainian media, the theatre was hosting a public event involving drone manufacturers when the attack happened. Drones have been frequently utilised on the battlefield by both sides of Russia’s 18-month attack.

Klymenko only said that an undefined event was happening in the structure and that Ukraine’s domestic security department was looking into the situation.

The strike ripped off the top of the neoclassical theatre and blasted away doors and windows in nearby residential buildings and storefronts. Blood trails and fragments of first aid kits that had been used to treat the injured strewn the streets.

In February 2022, as part of its full-scale invasion, Russia launched missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities that were distant from the front lines.
