UNITED STATES: Threads, Instagram’s messaging app touted as the rival to Twitter, has witnessed a dramatic decline in its user engagement, raising questions about its future viability in the competitive social media landscape.

According to recent data released by analytics firm Similar Web, Threads has experienced a staggering 79% drop in its daily active users, sparking discussions about the factors contributing to this downward spiral and potential remedies for its revival.

Threads, which burst onto the scene with a rapid onboarding of users and an initial rush of excitement, achieved the remarkable feat of reaching 100 million users faster than any other app. However, the jubilation seems to have waned quickly, leaving the app struggling to retain its once-sizable user base.

The decline in engagement becomes more evident when comparing the peak usage of 49.3 million daily active users worldwide on July 7, which nosedived to a mere 10.3 million by August 7.

The United States experienced a similar trend, with Threads’ peak usage of 2.3 million daily active users on July 7 dwindling to approximately 576,000 just a month later. Equally alarming is the substantial reduction in average usage time.

Users globally spent an average of 14 minutes on the app when it was initially launched, with American users dedicating nearly 21 minutes to the platform on July 7. However, these figures have plummeted to a meager 3 minutes by August 7, a significant blow to the app’s appeal and user engagement.

In contrast, X (formerly Twitter) has managed to maintain a strong user base. Boasting 100 million daily active users on Android alone and an average usage time of 25 minutes per day, X’s performance underscores the continued demand for engaging social media platforms that cater to users’ preferences and content consumption habits.

The decline in Threads’ popularity can be attributed to multiple factors, including its inability to offer consistent and captivating content that keeps users engaged and returning.

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, acknowledged this issue during a recent investor call, stressing the necessity for Threads to craft an immersive and appealing user experience. Achieving product-market fit and retaining users through tailored engagement strategies were highlighted as essential steps in the process.

For Threads to reclaim its lost glory, the app must take immediate action. This involves a strategic realignment to prioritize user experience, delivering high-quality and unique content that resonates with its audience. Bolstering community-building efforts and fostering a sense of belonging among users could also play a pivotal role in rekindling interest in the platform.
