INDIA: Hukum, Tiger ka hukum! Rajinikanth’s Jailer brought a complete entertainment package filled with Thalaivar’s swag. Theatres erupting with cheering and hooting on just a showcase of the title card defines the aura of this Tamil Superstar.
Nelson Dilipkumar’s directorial Jailer has an acting team brimming with talented stars from every corner of Indian Cinema. First comes one and only Thalaivar as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, who steers the film with his style and action. Later joins, Vinayakan, Ramya Krishnan, Vasanth Ravi, Sunil, and Yogi Babu.
Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Jackie Shroff, Tamannah, Makarand Deshpande, and Kishore round up the ensemble with cameo appearances.
Jailer marks a stylish comeback of Rajinikanth and Nelson with a bang
Rajinikanth and Nelson’s previous releases, Annaathe and Thalapathy Vijay’s Beast, failed to meet the audience’s expectations. Therefore, this team-up had a high stake in delivering what fans needed to whistle and cheer on big screens.
Given a plot filled with action and emotions, Jailer has hit the mark with Nelson’s directorial vision and Rajinikanth’s stardom. Salute to Thalaivar, who, at the age of 72, is pulling off stellar action sequences that too with the same swag and style from his early days in Tamil Cinema.
The way Jailer slashes every goon in bits and pieces gives us the idea why most characters fear him. This was only possible due to the actor’s roaring performance which propels the entire plot of the Tamil featurette. The film is filled with the grandeur entry scenes of Rajinikanth to the background score of Anirudh’s hit music piece ‘Hukum’.
Credits must be given to Nelson, who, with his direction and writing skills, perfectly managed to showcase the star power of the Tamil Superstar while balancing the requirements of fans and critics. He has crafted a world with multiple characters worth remembering. Especially the sharpshooters, who only have a little to say but deliver a lot with their sniping technique.
With big screens tightly packed with the audience, Nelson introduces the menacing villain Varman played by Vinayakan. The intro shot, where he kills three goons by submerging them alive in sulphuric acid, sets the level of his cruelty and madness.
This decision of Nelson to first showcase the villain to the audience gave a brief about his vision regarding Jailer. Vinayakan is playing a character filled with a severe and comedic tone. To add more to his persona, Nelson has added a touch of borderline psycho trait. The actor brings all we need in a villain with a brilliant performance.
Talking about the cameo appearances, Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar steals the show with their screen presence. Tamannah is also there to add a comedic and romantic subplot with Sunil that works well, providing a laughter recipe.
However, when it comes to the hilarious element in Jailer, Yogi Babu arrives to lighten up the mood by killing seriousness. The conversation between him and Rajinikanth is a sure-shot humour we crave in mass entertainers.
Jailer bags extra points on its action sequences filled with blood and gore. The film can be considered an R-rated monster hiding under the skin of a pg-13 rating.
Despite an engaging first half, Jailer loses its grip slightly in the second half. The plot revolving around the crown has not been properly explained to viewers. A proper story for Varman and his motifs would have been the icing on the cake, but it was missing from the plot. Ramya Krishnan’s outstanding acting abilities have been underutilised due to her little screen time.
Verdict:
Jailer is a perfect return of Rajinikanth and Nelson that packs everything, from action to emotions. The filmmaker has mastered the art of elevation with the talented star cast, delivering the best to the masses.
