INDIA. West Bengal: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a counterattack against the ruling parties, Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal and Congress in Rajasthan, over crimes against women in their respective states.
BJP MP Locket Chatterjee alleged that during a recent panchayat election in Panchla, West Bengal, a woman candidate of the gram sabha was stripped naked inside the polling booth, and people misbehaved with her.
However, she mentioned that there is no video evidence as everyone present at the booth was armed.
During a press conference at the party headquarters in Delhi, Chatterjee raised the issue, condemning the violence and atrocities against women during the panchayat elections in West Bengal. She highlighted the incident in Panchla and accused the ruling TMC of being responsible.
BJP West Bengal President Sukanta Majumdar also expressed his concern over the violence and mistreatment of women during the recent panchayat elections in the state.
He compared the situation to the unfortunate Manipur incident and questioned why one incident received widespread attention while the other did not, suggesting that the lack of video evidence might be a factor.
In response to the series of allegations, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and BJP general secretary Arun Singh accused the Congress-ruled Rajasthan of failing to address the increasing crimes against women.
They cited data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) claiming that Rajasthan has become the number one state in the country for crime against women, with one million criminal cases registered in the last four and a half years.
These counterattacks come after the recent incident in Manipur, where a shocking case of violence against a woman took place, and it has garnered widespread attention and condemnation.
The BJP is now drawing attention to similar incidents in West Bengal and Rajasthan, accusing the ruling parties of not doing enough to address crimes against women in their respective states.
