INDIA: In a recently concluded World Test Championship (WTC) Final between India and Australia, Indian opener Shubman Gill found himself at the center of a controversy surrounding his dismissal. The incident took a new turn when Gill took to social media to express his discontent, drawing criticism from former Australian captain Ricky Ponting and former Australian coach Justin Langer.
During India’s second innings, Gill and captain Rohit Sharma got off to a strong start, chasing a daunting target of 444 runs. However, the slight extra bounce on the pitch caused Gill to be out in the eighth over of Scott Boland. The ball clipped his bat and flew to the slips, where Cameron Green dived to his left and took a remarkable one-handed catch.

Former Australian coach Justin Langer, expressed his disapproval of Gill’s social media response, labelling it irresponsible and showcasing the young cricketer’s inexperience. Langer acknowledged the challenges faced by modern-day players in navigating the realm of social media, cautioning against hasty reactions.
Lending his voice to the criticism, Ricky Ponting, a highly respected figure in Australian cricket, emphasized that Gill’s tweet could have consequences. Ponting believed that the Indian batsman may face a fine or even a suspension for directly criticizing the umpire’s decision. Ponting further stated, “The whole world was going to do that for him; he didn’t need to say a word.” His comment indicated that the youngster’s social media response was redundant, as numerous voices had already raised concerns over the contentious catch.
