SPAIN: In an intense battle during the Spanish Grand Prix, Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso showcased their racing skills while maintaining mutual respect. The close encounter between the former Alpine teammates may have appeared dramatic, but both drivers expressed satisfaction with the exchange.
The tension between Ocon and Alonso was evident in their final season together as Alpine teammates in 2022.
Alonso’s impending move to Aston Martin further strained the relationship, with the Spanish driver occasionally making subtle jabs at his former team and teammate during the 2023 Formula 1 season.
Ocon and Alonso found themselves in a wheel-to-wheel battle on the start-finish straight in the Spanish GP. As Alonso attempted to overtake Ocon, the French driver made a late defensive move to the right, momentarily forcing Alonso onto the grass.
However, both drivers emerged unscathed, and the stewards deemed the exchange acceptable. Alonso eventually made the pass and finished the race in seventh position, five seconds ahead of Ocon.
Contrary to the dramatic appearance, Ocon expressed joy at racing with Alonso, stating, “There was no drama at all”. He added that it was good racing, that he enjoyed it, and that he will enjoy many more battles with Fernando.
The French driver demonstrated sportsmanship by acknowledging Alonso’s superior pace and conceding the position.
Alonso echoed Ocon’s sentiments, affirming that he didn’t perceive anything untoward during their battle. He mentioned that unless the TV cameras showed something different, he believed the exchange was fair.
In the Constructors’ standings, Alpine and Aston Martin achieved notable results at the Spanish Grand Prix. Alpine extended their lead over McLaren to 23 points, solidifying their fifth position.
On the other hand, Aston Martin lost their second-place spot to Mercedes and now faces an 18-point deficit to the eight-time Constructors’ champions.
