UNITED STATES: Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is officially rated R, confirmed by Universal Pictures. Reportedly, it has the Imax 70mm film format with a promising experience. This is Nolan’s first R-rated film since 2002’s Insomnia. Thus, the filmmaker confirmed that Oppenheimer is the longest movie of his career to date.
According to reports, the movie is so long that Imax prints are “11 miles of film stock” and “weigh somewhere around 600 pounds.” Only 25 venues in North America are currently showing the movie in its current format.
AMC Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles, AMC Lincoln Square in New York, Cinemark Dallas, Regal King of Prussia nearby Philadelphia, and the AutoNation Imax in Fort Lauderdale are a few of these locations.
Nolan said, “The headline, in my opinion, is that filming on Imax 70mm film allows the screen to vanish. You’re getting a 3D effect without wearing glasses. You have a large screen that fills the audience’s peripheral vision. You’re immersing them in the film’s world. The image’s sharpness, clarity, and depth are unrivalled.”
Nolan added, “We’re able to do things with the picture now that before we were only able to do with sound in terms of an oversize impact for the audience — an almost physical sense of response to the film.”
In Oppenheimer, Nolan follows theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer as he directs the Manhattan Project and develops the atomic weapon to end WWII. Verisimilitude is vital to Nolan the feature, primarily because he produces an atomic bomb explosion for the film without relying entirely on VFX.
