INDIA: The much-talked-about protest of the Indian Olympic medallist wrestlers is making headlines every day. However, yesterday, Delhi Police apprehended wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia for violating law and order.
Later, an FIR was lodged against them as they tried to march to the new Parliament building. The sports enthusiast were on a protest demanding the arrest of their federation chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, over sexual harassment allegations.
The entire clash between the cops and the wrestlers went viral all over the social media handles.
Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, and other wrestlers were seen being dragged by the scruff of their necks by the police from Jantar Mantar, where they have been protesting for more than a month.
Furthermore, the demonstrators have been charged under sections 147, 149, 186, 188, 332, 353, and Section 3 of the PDPP Act of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Additionally, the protesters have been removed from their location, and all the tents and their belongings have been pulled out from the protesting site. As per reports, the police detained over 700 protesters.
Punia stated that the Mahapanchayat would take place today. He continued that the wrestlers are battling for their dignity.
“They’re inaugurating the new Parliament building today but murdering democracy in the country,” he added further. Additionally, he urged the administration to free the protestors held by the police.
Mahapanchayat is a new protest norm for wrestlers who wish to raise their issues outside the new Parliament.
As per Delhi Police, despite all requests, protesters violated the law. This is why the ongoing sit-in protest has been called off. If the wrestlers apply for another sit-in protest, they will be allowed to do it at a suitable location other than Jantar Mantar.
