The Gaganyaan is expected to be launched next year. India plans to launch an unmanned mission and send a female robot in the first and second missions, respectively, preceding the Gaganyaan human spaceflight program.

The Gaganyaan project envisions a demonstration of human spaceflight capability by sending a three-person crew into a 400-kilometre orbit for a three-day mission and safely returning them to Earth by landing in Indian sea waters.

Precursor missions are meant to demonstrate the levels of technological preparedness prior to carrying out the actual Human Space Flight mission. Integrated Air Drop Test (IADT), Pad Abort Test (PAT), and Test Vehicle (TV) flights are among the demonstrator missions.
