UNITED STATES: The most thunderous standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival so far was given during the screening of Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” on Saturday night.

The dark, mostly omitted part of American history is the subject of this three-hour, 26-minute drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone that struck an emotional chord with theatregoers on the French Riviera.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” premiered outside of competition at Cannes, barring it from the Palme d’Or, the festival’s top honour. Scorsese bagged a Palme for “Taxi Driver” and a directing award at Cannes for “After Hours.”

The crowd was so fascinated that they stood up and cheered for nine minutes even after experiencing a movie that was longer than “Titanic.” Leo and Scorsese, who attended the festival for the first time since 1985’s “After Hours,” are two stars that Cannes clearly adores.

Scorsese says, following a grand applause and addressing the crowd, “Everyone connected with the picture. My old pals Bob and Leo and Jesse and Lily We shot this a couple of years ago in Oklahoma. It’s taken its time to come around, but Apple did so great by us. There was lots of grass. I’m a New Yorker. I was very surprised. This was an amazing experience. We lived in that world.”

“Killers of the Flower Moon” is the first feature film that Oscar winners DiCaprio and De Niro have collaborated on since Michael Caton-Jones’ 1993 drama “This Boy’s Life.”

In Scorsese’s short film “The Audition,” both performers portrayed fictitious versions of themselves. De Niro appeared in Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver,” “Cape Fear,” and “Raging Bull,” receiving nominations for best actor at the Oscars for the latter. For Scorsese’s films “The Aviator” and “The Wolf of Wall Street,” DiCaprio received Oscar nominations.
