JAPAN: Canadian PM Justin Trudeau and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, took public potshots at each other on Friday as the two world leaders were attending the Group of Seven (G7) leader summit in Japan. The argument happened over the subject of LGBTQ rights, as media outlets reported.
Just prior to private discussions, Justin Trudeau slammed Giorgia Meloni, and Italy said that Canada is concerned about certain of Italy’s stances on LGBT rights, but he welcome the opportunity to speak with Meloni.
Giorgia Meloni expressed her annoyance by accusing the Canadian PM of being a “victim of fake news”. She called his remarks “a little rash.” Following their discussion, the prime minister of Italy claimed that Justin Trudeau most likely now understood the situation better.
Meloni also stated that following their conversations, he probably realised that what has been written about her does not correlate to her reality.
According to Justin Trudeau’s office, the Canadian Prime Minister raised concern over LGBTQ rights in Italy. Giorgia Meloni, Italy’s prime minister, defended her government’s stance, saying they were following to court decisions on LGBTQ issues, as per statement.
In March, gay rights campaigners criticised Giorgia Meloni’s far-right-led administration for ordering local councils to stop officially recognising both parents in same-sex couples and instead recognise just the biological parent. They called the decision “homophobic.”
At that time, Rainbow Families’ president, Alessia Crocini, stated, “This government is the maximum expression of homophobia. Meloni says that for a child to grow up well, they need a mother and father, even if decades of research say otherwise. It is insulting to hundreds of thousands of families with two same-sex parents.”
