23-Year-Old Navy Officer Dies Onboard INS Brahmaputra During Sea Operations

The unfortunate death of Mohit, occurred a few days after a Marine Commando of the Indian Navy Chandaka Govind lost his life after falling from a parachute

INDIA. Mumbai: In an unfortunate accident at sea, Mohit (23) working as Hull Artificer 4, succumbed to injuries onboard the INS Brahmaputra during operations at sea along the West Coast on Saturday.

In a statement on Sunday, the Indian Navy said, “In an unfortunate accident in the sea on April 8, Mohit, Hull Artificer 4, aged 23 years, succumbed to injuries onboard INS Brahmaputra during operations. A board of inquiry is being ordered to investigate the cause of death of the Indian Navy sailor.”

Chief of Navy Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar and all personnel of the Navy paid tributes to Mohit. “Adm. R Hari Kumar #CNS & all personnel of #IndianNavy pay tribute to Mohit, HA4, who lost his life during an exercise at sea on 8 Apr 23 & extend heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family,” the Navy said in a tweet.

The Hull Artificer 4 is a rank equivalent to Petty Officer. The details of the accident were not immediately known, even as the Yellow Gate Police in South Mumbai registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) case. They said they had started an investigation into the matter.

INS Brahmaputra, the first of the indigenously built “Brahmaputra” class guided missile frigate, was commissioned on April 14, 2000. The ship is manned by a crew of 40 officers and 330 sailors. The ship is fitted with medium-range, close-range, and anti-aircraft guns, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, and torpedo launchers. 

The unfortunate death of Mohit, occurred a few days after a Marine Commando of the Indian Navy, Chandaka Govind, lost his life after falling from a parachute during a training session in Bankura, Panagarh, West Bengal, on April 5. A training session was being conducted at the Panagarh air base of the Eastern Air Command of the Indian Air Force.

Chandaka Govind, a Petty Officer, based at INS Karna, the Indian Special Operations Forces, MARCOS (Marine Commandos), at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, was on training at Panagarh.
